Removing Stent after Lithotripsy?

Yesterday my brother had lithotripsy with a stent placed. He was told to remove the stent himself on Wednesday. Is that a common practice-to have the patient remove his own stent? His Urologist is 1.5 hrs from his home, so I'm thinking that's why. I've just never heard of that and I'm afraid from him. Does anyone know anything about this practice?
